NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle has appointed Tilsa Rodriguez-Gonzalez as the new Supervisor of Physical Education and Health, Pre-K-12th grade. The Board of Education approved the appointment of Mrs. Rodriguez-Gonzalez at its meeting last night.

Mrs. Rodriguez-Gonzalez has been an educator for 20 years, both as a health and physical education teacher and as an administrator, and is currently a teacher in the New York City Department of Education.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle has appointed Dr. Nicolas Cracco as the new principal of the Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center. The Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Cracco at its meeting last night.

Dr. Cracco was the assistant principal of the Early Childhood Discovery and Design Magnet School, P.S. 185, in New York. He previously taught mathematics at Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy in the Bronx.

December Holiday Closings at Libraries

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --The New Rochelle Public Library and the Huguenot Children’s Library will close at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 24th and will be closed all day on Sunday, December 25th and Monday, December 26th for Christmas observances. The libraries will resume regular operating hours on Tuesday, December 27th.

The libraries will close at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 31st for New Year’s Eve, and will be closed all day, Sunday, January 1st and Monday, January 2nd for New Year’s observances. The libraries will resume regular operating hours on Tuesday, January 3rd.

Barnard Creates Awareness About World Pancreatic Cancer Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Earlier this month, Barnard school went purple to create more awareness about World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

The event held on Nov. 17 was organized by Tara Hernandez, a kindergarten teacher, in memory of her mom, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez. Hernandez's mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer more than nine years ago, and she died in 2009.

Students Explore Marine Life in Pelham Bay

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Marine science is a new elective offered at New Rochelle High School this year, and students are taking full advantage of all the subaqueous resources their community has to offer.

In October, members of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation led students on a tour of the Hudson River at Iona Island. They traveled through the tidal marshes near Bear Mountain, learning about the Hudson's watershed and the environmental effects of the wetland ecosystem.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle and the Westchester and National Alliances of Black Educators will host their annual Black History Spoken Word and Art Exhibit on February 11, 2017.

The event will celebrate the life and contributions of STEM pioneer Benjamin Banneker.

Participants are encouraged to share their visual artwork, poetry, dance, and other performance arts.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The joyful music of Christmas, Hanukah, and other winter celebrations will be performed by the “Sing Your Heart Out” chorus in the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library on Sunday, December 18, at 4:00 pm. The concert, “Songs of the Season,” is a culminating event for the group of singers, ages 55 and older, who have been rehearsing under the direction of music aficionado Robert Puleo for the past few months. The program includes a lively assortment of popular and traditional selections and a festive “sing-along” medley.

Crews Respond Quickly to Oil Spill at Iona College in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE - An oil spill shut down Pryer Terrace for several hours earlier today as hundreds of gallons of home heating oil was accidentally dumped onto the back driveway of Rice Hall on the Iona College campus.

The incident began at about 8:30 a.m. Friday when one of three compartments in the truck fractured, allowing oil to leak out, spilling onto the roadway and down a hill.

Iona College facilities crew were on hand when the oil spill began.
