Maier Starts, Finkel Closes Out 4-1 Victory for Baseball at UNC Asheville to Open Series

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --  Bill Maier turned in a second straight solid start for the Iona College baseball team and benefited from an early 3-0 lead to earn a 4-1 victory at UNC Asheville to open a non-conference three-game series this afternoon.

Maier worked through nine hits surrendered to move to 2-0 on the season in the same amount of starts, adding five strikeouts while not walking a batter with one run surrendered. Jared Finkel earned the save by striking out six of the seven batters he faced while Andrew Camiolo added a scoreless inning of relief.

Lacrosse Stopped by Lafayette at Home, 16-11

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College lacrosse team was haulted by Lafayette 16-11 Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels were outshot by the Leopards 42-39, and committed 43 fouls compared to the opposition’s 27.

Junior Jenna Tolzmann and freshman Delaney Davison each tallied a hat-trick in the defeat, with senior Erin Pugh picking up two goals. Junior Pamela Giordano, and sophomores Kathryn Flannigan, Libby Miller, and Christine Gironda each found the back of the net once in the contest.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College women’s basketball program avenged two regular season losses to Siena by toppling the No. 4 seeded Saints in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals, 67-47.  The Gaels had three Gaels in double-figures and managed a team-defensive effort that limited Siena to just 30.8% shooting.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, however, were unable to get past UNC Asheville in game two of a three-game series as the hosts secured a 10-8 victory.

Trailing 10-5 in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded, Joseph Lovecchio singled to right field to drive in two runs to cut the deficit to 10-7 with only one out. In the next at-bat, Matt Byrne singled in Matt Flannery to bring the Gaels (3-2) to within two runs. However, a double play ended the inning and rally as the Bulldogs (4-5) tied the weekend series.

Women’s Basketball Earns Region XV Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College Women's Basketball team's 2016-17 season has been one of rebirth. On Sunday, the Mustangs defeated ASA College, 66-58, in the Region XV Championship at Westchester Community College. With the win, they improved to 20-6 on the season and took home their first Region XV Championship under Head Coach Ricky Johns. In the 2015-2016 season, the team won only ten games.
