The following letter, with accompanying infographic, was sent to New Rochelle residents today by Board of Education President Rachel Relkin and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian G. Osborne.

 

Dear New Rochelle Parent or Guardian:

It was invaluable to hear from so many New Rochelle community members at last night’s Board of Education meeting in City Hall. We want to assure you that we heard your concerns and our responsibility is to respond quickly.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- "There is no higher priority than the safety of our children, and there is no asset of greater importance to New Rochelle that public confidence in our schools.

Within the past week, there have been three violent incidents involving New Rochelle High School students, two off school grounds, and the most recent in a classroom. Each of these incidents in isolation would be a matter of grave concern. Coming in such quick succession, they pose an urgent challenge that commands our full attention.

The New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence Approves 15 Grants to Support New Rochelle’s Public Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- From a historical tour of New Rochelle on land and sea, to a five-foot tall robot, the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence is spreading almost $20,000 in grants to 15 projects across New Rochelle public schools.

The awards come from a NR Fund grantmaking pilot program that aims to offer unique experiences and enhancements to the academic curriculum. As part of the Fund’s 20th Anniversary Initiatives, administrators, teachers, parents and students were invited to submit grant requests for innovative projects that promote active student learning.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. today announced that Frank Valencia of 

New Rochelle, New York was arraigned on a Grand Jury indictment and charged with Attempted Aggravated Murder in connection with the September 25th incident that resulted in a Yonkers police officer being shot in the jaw.

Valencia (DOB 6/22/99), who was arraigned before Judge George Fufidio, was charged with:

•four counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder;

•four counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree;

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - As the community was reeling yesterday from the third major violent incident in 8 days with one assailant still on the loose, school officials were busy crafting propaganda to be sent by school members under the guise of personal emails to their “friends”. And herein lies a large problem in our district: a school board more concerned with Public Relations than actually solving problems.

New Rochelle High School Student Stabbed Today by Student Assaulted at Pizza Place Yesterday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A New Rochelle High School student was taken to the trauma unit at Jacobi Medical Center in serious conditions with multiple stab wounds after an assault Thursday morning. Police are looking for a suspect who fled the scene, the student assaulted yesterday by a group of 7 New Rochelle High School students. The suspect is the same student who stabbed a classmate at Isaac E. Young Middle School in May 2016.

New Rochelle High School Student Z’inah Brown Appears in Court on Murder Charge as Case Heads to Grand Jury

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School student Z’inah Brown appeared in City Court of New Rochelle this afternoon before Judge Anthony Carbone less than a week after she was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in the stabbing death of classmate Valeree Schwab.

Brown was dressed in a black long-sleeve shirt, black pants and the same gray and maroon Nike sneakers she wore last week at her arraignment, this time with the shoelaces removed.
