Yonkers Felon Pleads Guilty to Robbing Women at Mount Vernon Train Station

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced Arthur Branch of Yonkers pleaded guilty Wednesday to Attempted Robbery in the Second Degree, a felony, for an incident that occurred Sept. 9, 2016, at a Mount Vernon train station. He faces 25 years to life in state prison and will be sentenced as a persistent violent felony offender. Branch is scheduled to appear for sentencing June 27.

Presented by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (BID), the market kicks off June 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green, along Huguenot Street between Lawton Street and Memorial Highway. It runs the same place and time every Saturday through Oct. 27.

101 Students Inducted into National Honor Society

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School inducted 101 students into the National Honor Society earlier this week in a ceremony that highlighted the four standards that are central to a society member: leadership, character, service and scholarship.

The ceremony was held on May 22 in the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium. Each of the inductees received a certificate. Art Faculty member Alexandra Brock was honored at the ceremony.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle Opera, Westchester’s longest running opera company, will present Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme, from June 21-24, 2018 in the Frank J. Auriana Theatre at the Ursuline School, 1345 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. The production will be directed by Company co-founder and artistic director Camille Coppola, with orchestra and chorus conducted by Brian Holman, set design by Anthony Valbiro and lighting design by Adam Welsh. The opera will be sung in Italian, with English supertitles.

Engel Announces $2,375,700 in Title I Funding for New Rochelle Schools

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel, a top Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, announced the U.S. Department of Education has allocated $2,375,700 in federal funds to schools in New Rochelle as part of the Fiscal Year 2018 Title I allocations.

Part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the Title I program provides financial assistance to school districts with high concentrations of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet state academic standards.

Morgan State Honors College Hires Convicted Felon

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Convicted felon, sex offender, serial liar and fraudster, Freddie Dean Smith is alive and well and currently working as the Student Services Coordinator for the Clara I. Adams Honors College at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Morgan State, a state-owned HBCU, ranks among the Top 20 Historically Black College and Universities in the United States.

New Rochelle Schools Back Off Re-Registration Commitment

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne announced today a significant retreat from a previous commitment to require all students in New Rochelle public schools to re-register before the start of the 2018-19 school year.

Osborne also announced the hiring of a former Superintendent from Port Chester to oversee the process.

The original plan announced last month called for district wide re-registration to begin June 25th at Trinity Elementary School. That is now off the table
