ALMS Student Sharpens Advocacy Skills Supporting Immigrants

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Hannah Klupt, a sixth-grader at Albert Leonard Middle School, feels strongly about supporting immigrants in the United States known as Dreamers - those who have lived in the country since they were children. Now, she is better prepared to make her case for them following a recent weekend of workshops at Columbia Teachers College.

"It's a big issue in this country," she said. "And the country is a democracy. I want it to be that everyone is welcome."

Meet Dr. Parvey at BOE Town Hall Monday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Community members will have a chance to ask questions of Interim Superintendent Dr. Magda Parvey at the Board of Education's next Town Hall meeting planned for 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. The session will be open to the public and will be held in the Linda E. Kelly Theater at New Rochelle High School, near the entrance off North and Braemar avenues. The District will provide Spanish language translation for those in attendance, and the session will be streamed live via the District website, www.nred.org.

Schools Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Across the City School District of New Rochelle, classes have been observing Hispanic Heritage Month with dance performances, lessons on the influences of Latin American luminaries and art projects inspired by the upcoming Dia de los Muertos.

The Columbus Elementary School PTA has been busy preparing for that school's annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration tonight, in which families of the students and alumni enjoy dancing and food from throughout Latin America.

Show Your Pride For Homecoming Weekend

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Come out and show your Purple Pride for the homecoming game tomorrow.

Senior Day begins at 2 p.m. on McKenna Field - before the big game - when senior football players and cheerleaders are introduced to the fans with their parents.

The game starts at 2:30 p.m. with the Varsity Football team hosting Timber Creek from New Jersey.

Special Olympics Team Achieves in First Event

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- As the athletes from New Rochelle's Special Olympics team played together against rival schools in the Regional Fall Sports Festival last Saturday, coach Rhonda Boychews saw something amazing happen.

"I watched as their confidence grew with each game," Boychew said of the eight team members who faced four other teams in Beacon, N.Y. "They experienced real competition with real failure and real success. In the end, they came away with three hard-earned goals and a second-place finish in their division."

Alice Walker Enthralls New Rochelle Audience

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- On Wednesday night, the main event in town was at New Rochelle High School where hundreds of audience members in the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium reveled in a visit by author and activist Alice Walker.

The literary giant best known for her 1982 Pulitzer prize-winning novel The Color Purple offered her wisdom and observations on facing racism, the Spielberg-directed movie adaptation of her famous book, environmentalism and more. She also gave advice on writing.

Alice Walker came to New Rochelle High School to speak Wednesday.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Community members will have a chance to ask questions of Interim Superintendent Dr. Magda Parvey at the Board of Education's next Town Hall meeting, 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

The session will be open to the public and will be held in the Linda E. Kelly Theater at New Rochelle High School, near the entrance off North and Braemar avenues. This will be the second in a new series of meetings that the Board has initiated with the community to hear and respond to questions from parents, students and others.
