On Friday, March 12th, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined by New Rochelle Superintendent Richard Organisciak, school officials and students, presented a $100,000 grant to the New Rochelle School District.
The money will be used to fund the expansion of the district’s SmartMusic program, giving elementary students new opportunities to learn how to play a musical instrument and improve their vocal performances.
“Programs like SmartMusic not only enrich children’s lives but enhance their arts education with lessons and skills that bring joy to their day and for some, the building blocks of a future career," said Klein.
New Rochelle High School launched the SmartMusic program in December 2008. Through performance learning software, students at all skill levels play instruments or sing with professional accompaniments. The program offers a variety of styles for band or string orchestra, brass, percussion, strings or vocal. Teachers assign students different exercises electronically and students complete them either in school or at home.Read more

Representing Bronx and Westchester Counties
From the Desk of State Senator Jeff Klein…
Funding Our Children’s Future
Dear Westchester Residents:
Ensuring that all children in New York State have access to a high quality education has always a top priority for me, regardless of our state’s budgetary situation. Providing vital and necessary funding to our public schools is our responsibility. At the same time, we cannot ignore the needs of the more than half a million children who attend New York’s religious and independent schools. These schools provide a valuable and vibrant education for students and do so at a considerable savings to New Yorkers’ hard earned tax dollars.Read more

Klein Bill Expands Opportunity for Seniors and the Physically Disabled to Participate in Democratic Process
ALBANY – State Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) announced on Monday that the Senate passed legislation to shorten work shifts for election-day poll workers. The bill (S1836) permits local Boards of Elections to hire election inspectors for half-day shifts, preventing fatigue and flexibility for workers whose shifts often start before the polls open at 6 AM and end after they close at 9 PM.
"Allowing election inspectors to work half-day shifts is a common sense change to New York election law. This bill allows these workers, many of whom are seniors or physically disabled, to enthusiastically participate on election days without putting a strain on their well-being by having to endure a twelve-hour workday. By creating shorter shifts, we also expand an opportunity for other New Yorkers to participate in the democratic process who would otherwise be unable to help out at the polls," said State Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester).Read more

In an effort to ensure the Hudson Valley is fairly represented in all legislative matters before the Senate, I and eight other local Senators representing Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester Counties have formed the Hudson Valley Delegation – a bipartisan coalition to more effectively advocate for the needs and concerns of the residents, communities, organizations, and elected officials of the Hudson Valley.
The Governor recently presented the State Legislature with his proposed Executive Budget for the coming year (SFY 2010-11). The Hudson Valley Delegation is holding two hearings to examine the impact of this proposed budget on our District and on the Hudson Valley region as a whole. Given the tough fiscal and economic times our State continues to face, your input on the key matters impacting our region is more vital than ever. I would like to invite you to attend these hearings to voice your priorities, comments, and concerns on the issues of greatest importance to you in this year’s budget process.
NEW YORK- Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) will sponsor a free home gardening program for residents of the 34th District at the New York Botanical Garden starting March 6th.
The program, now in its tenth year, includes four classes—Earth-Friendly Gardening Basics, Easy-Care Flower Gardens, Organic Herb and Vegetable Gardening and Low-Maintenance Landscaping.
This year, the program will focus on environmentally-friendly gardening and provide participants with free sunflower seeds as part of a Summer Sunflower Contest. A prize will be awarded to the grower of the sunflower with the largest diameter head.
Participants must register for the program in order to attend. Bronx and Westchester residents can expect to receive sign-up forms in their mailboxes starting February 18th. Constituents may also register at [email protected].
“I am pleased to invite all of my constituents to participate in this program. Whether a person is a gardening novice, interested in organic vegetables, or wants to be more eco-friendly, this program has something for everyone,” said Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westcheter).
