Another New Rochelle Council Member Will Not Seek Re-Election

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Council Member Jared Rice announced today that he will not seek re-election in November. Rice has represented District 3 since he won a special election in 2010 to fill the unexpired term of James Stowe who passed while still in office.

“It is an emotional day for me,” said Rice. “Going on into my ninth year in office on the New Rochelle City Council, I have decided not to seek re-election for another term.”

“Serving on the council has been the opportunity of a lifetime for me,” he added.

Last week, Council Member Barry Fertel of District 5 announced he would not seek re-election in the fall.

Rice graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1997. He received a basketball scholarship from Delaware State University where he graduated with a degree in political science. Rice went on to North Carolina Central University School of Law where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 2004.

Rice joined the family law firm of Rice and Rice. His mother is New Rochelle Judge Gail Rice.

After winning a special election in 2010, Rice won a full-term in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.

Rice organized the renaming of the Ruby Dee Park at Library Green and led a committee on Community Policing. He was an inaugural co-chair of My Brother’s Keeper New Rochelle, a position he continues to hold. Rice was inducted into the New Rochelle High School Wall of Fame in 2017.

Rice lives in New Rochelle with his wife and two children.
