NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Timely hitting and a pair of strong pitching performances catapulted the Monroe College baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Brookdale Community College in a game played in New Rochelle on Friday.  Isiah Torres had the game-winning RBI for the Mustangs.

Andres Fernandez got the start on the mound for the Mustangs and the sophomore went 6.2 innings to earn the win.  Tony Hernandez tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season.

Monroe took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Torres reached on a walk.  He moved to second on a balk and got to third on a wild pitch.  From there, Lewis Gonzalez brought him in with a ball that was misplayed for an error.

Brookdale tied the game with a run in the fifth, but Monroe pushed across a run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.  Alex De La Cruz walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Two batters later, Torres drove him in with a line-drive single to center.  The Mustangs added an insurance run in the seventh when C.J. Moore reached on an infield hit.  He advanced on a sacrifice bunt and got to third on a failed pickoff.  He came in on an RBI groundout from Jose Pena.

The two pitchers combined to strikeout seven batters without surrendering any walks.  The Mustangs improved to 17-8 with the win.

The Monroe College baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 2, when they face Rockland Community College in a doubleheader from Piermont, New York.  The first game is slated to begin at noon.
