Monroe joins local contributors in support of community celebration

Monroe College has agreed to make a generous contribution to the City of New Rochelle’s community celebration fund in order to support the 2011 Memorial Day Parade.

In adopting its 2011 budget, the New Rochelle City Council preserved funding for the overtime costs associated with the Memorial Day Parade, Thanksgiving Parade and Fourth of July Fireworks, but eliminated funding for all other costs, with the expectation of soliciting and obtaining private contributions to maintain these much-beloved events.

John & Charles Valenti have previously committed to maintaining their sponsorship of the Thanksgiving Parade. Monroe’s generosity joins that of veterans groups, local businesses and community groups to ensure that the Memorial Day Parade, presented by the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association and the City of New Rochelle, returns for another successful year.

“Monroe College’s leadership exemplifies the kind of public-private partnership through which we can preserve our important community celebrations, even at a time of fiscal challenge,” said Mayor Noam Bramson.

“Monroe is proud to be a part of New Rochelle,” said the College’s Executive Vice President, Marc Jerome, “And we are pleased to sustain great traditions that bring the entire New Rochelle community together.”

“We greatly appreciate the generosity of Monroe College,” said Peter Parente, UVMPA Parade Coordinator. “The donations and hard work of so many of our partners are what makes this parade a success. Monroe’s contribution is especially welcomed in these tough financial times.”

The Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30. The day begins with a ceremony at 10:30 am at Memorial Plaza followed by a parade down Huguenot Street, North Avenue and Pelham Road into Hudson Park for a waterfront ceremony. Afterward, all are invited for a Picnic in the Park featuring food, live music, displays, games and more. Special this year will be a performance by the 50-piece West Point concert band and a landing by the Marine Corps Osprey helicopter. Updates and parade information will be posted to the City website www. newrochelleny.com

With funding now secure for New Rochelle’s two parades, City officials will now begin raising private contributions for the Fourth of July Fireworks.
