NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Barry Fertel announced today that he will not seek a fourth term on the New Rochelle City Council.

“After much consideration and thought, I have decided not to seek re-election to the City Council,” said Fertel in a public statement released late this afternoon.

“I have served on the New Rochelle City Council representing District 5 for almost fourteen years and have thoroughly enjoyed every second of it,” said Fertel. “I am proud of my accomplishments and firmly believe that New Rochelle is a better place than it was when I first started.”

Fertel has represented District 5 for 14 years after he appointed by the City Council to fill the unexpired term of Noam Bramson who vacated the position after he was appointed Mayor to fill the unexpired term of Tim Idoni who resigned in January 2006 after having been elected Westchester County Clerk. Bramson and Idoni’s terms expired on December 31, 2009.

Fertel was elected to fill Bramson’s unexpired term in a special election in November 2006. Fertel was elected to his first full term in 2007 and re-elected in 2011 and 2015.

Prior to serving on the New Rochelle City Council, Fertel served on the New Rochelle Board of Education for over 14 years making Fertel one of the longest serving representatives in modern New Rochelle history. Fertel served both as the Board’s vice-president and president. Fertel served as a member of the board of directors of the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence.

According to the City of New Rochelle website, Mr. Fertel, a practicing attorney, grew up in the Bronx and attended the Bronx High School of Science. He received his BA from Stony Brook University and his law degree cum laude from the University of Buffalo, where he was president of the Student Bar Association. Before entering private practice, he worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of New York.
