New Rochelle Elementary School Principal Unexpectedly Resigned

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — An elementary school principal in New Rochelle has unexpectedly resigned, a month before the end of the school year.

Sonya Nunez was the Principal of Columbus Elementary School. She submitted her resignation on Friday. She will not be back at the school on Tuesday, knowledgeable sources have confirmed.

The resignation is not for personal or medical reasons, sources say, without providing specifics.

Nunez served as Assistant Principal under her predecessor as Principal, Dr. Yigal Joseph, who retired in 2012. Nunez served as Columbus principal for three years before being granted tenure in 2015.

A request for further information from district officials did not receive a response going into the Memorial Day weekend. We will update the story when we get a response.

Ken Levy, an educational consultant who was previously a teacher and principal in the New Rochelle school district will serve as interim Principal until a replacement can be hired, sources say. Levi was a teacher at Jefferson Elementary and Isaac E. Young Middle School. He was a Principal at Fox Lane Middle School in Bedford, NY, Peekskill Middle School in Peekskill, NY and Brookside Elementary School in Yorktown, NY. He was an interim Principal at Trinity Elementary School and an interim Assistant Principal at Ward Elementary School.

UPDATE: The following message was sent to parents and staff at Columbus:

To the Columbus School Community,

Starting Tuesday, May 31, Mr. Ken Levy will be acting principal at Columbus School for the remainder of the school year, replacing outgoing principal Sonia Nunez.

Mr. Levy is an experienced retired elementary school principal who has served in many interim capacities including both Trinity and Ward elementary schools in New Rochelle.

We are confident that the entire Columbus staff and community, supported by Mr. Levy and Ms. Owens, will assure that Columbus school students have a successful ending to the school year.

We will keep you posted regarding plans for identifying a new principal for Columbus elementary school.

Sincerely,

Brian Osborne

Superintendent of Schools
