Rowing Concludes 2016 MAAC Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s and women’s rowing teams completed their 2016 campaign after competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer in Mercer County Park on Sunday, May 15.

On the Men’s side, the Gaels came in fourth place, totaling 13 points. In the Varsity 8 Grand Finale, the Maroon and Gold finished in fourth with a time of 6:42.440. The boat consisted of freshmen coxswain Tyler Reynolds, Patrick Drummond, Barry James, Logan Pietroforte, Edward Gonzalez, Nicholas Negron, Kevin Menna, Christian Carstensen, and John Hidalgo.

Assistant coach Thomas Dougherty was proud of the leadership the veterans have demonstrated this season. “This boat showed great leadership this year helping showing a young team the work that needs to be put in and the commitment they need to have.”

In the Men’s Varsity 4 Grand Finale, the Gaels finished in third, behind Fairfield and Canisius. The Gaels bested Marist and Manhattan, clocking in with a time of 7.22.168. The boat was led by sophomore coxswain Bianca Mesqueue, seniors Ryan Dronzek, and Peter Collins, sophomores Vito Roca and Abraham Bluestone.

For the women, the program finished in seventh place with a total of 23 points. In the women’s Varsity 8 finale, the Gaels finished in sixth with a time of 7:11.590. The squad was led by sophomore coxswain Madison Kirch, senior Chloe Walker, junior Brittany Quirino, sophomores Rachel Landock and Serena Yanitelli, and freshmen Reise Manchester, Willow Held-Pistone, Alexandra Arluna, and Danielle Varley.

Dougherty praised the group for their improvement this season. “This group worked extremely hard and put the work in on a daily basis.” Dougherty stated. “The conference championship was no different as they put the whole season together and had their best race of the year.”

The Varsity 4 completed the race with a time of 8:46.715. The team of sophomore coxswain Elise Tarrant, seniors Caitlin McGurran and Carmen Ayala, sophomore Katie Mulligan, and freshman Aisling Connolly finished with a time of 8.46.715.
