NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The College of New Rochelle Women’s Volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a sweep of York College and King’s College (NY) in its home opener Saturday afternoon.  The Blue Angels didn’t drop a set all day, as they defeated York 25-7, 25-6, and 25-16 and then trumped King’s 25-7, 26-24, and 25-10.

The Blue Angels dismantled York in just under an hour.  The first set was full of CNR servies aces and York miscues.  Sophomore Fabiola Padilla Rios (San Juan, PR) and junior Melanie Ann Lopez Soto (Gurabo, PR) each picked up two aces in the frame.  Junior Tiany Perez Diaz (Juncos, PR) led the attack with three kills. The defense was impressive as they allowed just one kill by the Cardinals.

It was much the same in set two as four CNR players tallied two kills and held York to just two positive attacks.  In the final frame, York made it competitive for a while, as two players each racked up three kills.  But, CNR rallied late to pull away and seal the three set victory.

Padilla Rios led CNR with seven kills, while Lopez led the way with 18 assists.  Perez Diaz finished the game with team-highs of seven aces and six digs.

In game two, the CNR ace-attack continued as seven of the first 10 points for CNR came off service aces.  That jump start led to an easy 25-7 first frame victory.  But, King’s adjusted in the 2nd set and made for the most exciting set of the day.  After building an 11-8 lead, CNR watched King’s rally to take the first lead of the day at 12-11.  The team traded points for a while, before King’s built a 20-17 lead.  Moments later, CNR faced the possibility of being tied 1-1 as the scoreboard read 24-22 Kings.  With the ball in the hands of CNR, junior Indigo Flowers (San Francisco, CA) served up the next four points, including an ace, to give the home team a thrilling win.

King’s never recovered from the tough 2nd frame loss, and ended up losing 25-10 in the final frame to end the match.

Perez Diaz led CNR with six kills the Kings match.  Lopez Soto was tops in service aces with six.  Padilla Rios led the team on the floor with 10 digs, while freshmen Stephanie Garcia (Chino, CA) added seven.  As a team, CNR produced 18 service aces.

CNR will be back in action this Friday as they travel to the Kean Invitational in New Jersey.  The Blue Angels open up with the hosts at 4:00pm, followed by Gettysburg at 6:00pm.  Day two of the event will see CNR face Gordon College and FDU-Florham.
